CBD and Anxiety
Many people use CBD for anxiety. Here’s what you need to know about using CBD to help you relax and unwind.
CBD is one of the many active chemicals—called cannabinoids—that are found in cannabis and hemp plants. Many people use CBD for anxiety.
Anxiety is a feeling that we all experience at various times in our lives. An anxiety disorder, however, refers to when the feeling of worry is overwhelming and excessive. Anxiety disorders can prevent you from functioning at your optimum, and they can be incredibly difficult to manage. Some people swear by using CBD to manage anxiety disorders. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, while it needs to be studied further, there’s some promising research that suggests CBD can help with the symptoms of anxiety disorders
The research on CBD and anxiety disorders
Quite a few studies suggest that CBD can help with anxiety disorders. It isn’t entirely clear why CBD seems to lift the mood, but a 2012 study concluded that it may have something to do with serotonin.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in stabilizing your mood. It’s often called the “feel-good chemical.” Low serotonin levels are associated with anxiety and depression. Both anxiety and depression are commonly treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs), which prevent your blood from absorbing too much serotonin. This allows the brain to use serotonin better.
CBD might be able to help with social anxiety disorder. In 2010, a small clinical study involved giving CBD to participants with the disorder. The study found that those who were given CBD, as opposed to a placebo, had reduced anxiety levels.
Research suggests that CBD could also help those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder caused by a traumatic event. A 2018 review of studies that looked at preclinical and human studies concluded that CBD has the potential to address the symptoms of PTSD. A 2019 clinical study, which looked at 11 adults with PTSD, found that a combination of therapy and CBD reduced PTSD symptoms.
Sleep issues, including sleeplessness and nightmares, are commonly caused by anxiety. Fortunately, a 2019 study concluded that CBD might be able to help with anxiety-induced insomnia, too.
What’s more is that a 2018 review suggested that CBD could reduce one’s overall stress level.
How to use CBD for anxiety
There is no ideal CBD dosage for anxiety because everybody’s biology is different. Your ideal CBD dosage will also depend on your weight, metabolism, and the severity of your anxiety levels.
Start with a low dose, and gradually increase it until you feel a difference. It might take a week (or a few weeks) of consistent use before you notice a difference in your anxiety levels. Take a look at our article on CBD dosage for more information.
It’s always a good idea to talk to a doctor before using CBD. While CBD is considered safe for consumption, it can interact with certain types of medication. A CBD-friendly doctor will be able to advise you on using CBD for anxiety.
